چکیده

Computer simulations of bypass hemodynamics can provide a valuable insight into the problem of graft failures, considering the close relationship between the hemodynamics and the patency and overall performance of implanted bypass grafts. However, to be able to reliably predict flow changes brought about by implanted bypass grafts, numerical simulations have to be carried out for physiologically-correct boundary conditions. In this regard, the paper demonstrates how various outlet boundary conditions (constant outlet pressure, Windkessel model and lumped parameter coronary model) can affect the quality of computed blood flow and wall shear stress distributions in relevant parts of two patient-specific aorto-coronary bypass models.

Comparison of the Graft Angles Effects on the Temporal Wall Shear Stress Gradients in the Aorto-Coronary and Coronary-Coronary Bypasses

In this theoretical study, the effect of various types of bypass graft angles on the flow field, has been investigated specially on the temporal Wall Shear Stress (WSS) on the toe, heel and some locations on the bed of the Left Anterior Descending (LAD) artery at the anastomoses areas in the Aorto-Coronary (AC) and Coronary-Coronary (CC) bypasses. Flow fields in both bypasses with angles of...

Influences of Geometric Configurations of Bypass Grafts on Hemodynamics in End-to-Side Anastomosis

BACKGROUND Although considerable efforts have been made to improve the graft patency in coronary artery bypass surgery, the role of biomechanical factors remains underrecognized. The aim of this study is to investigate the influences of geometric configurations of the bypass graft on hemodynamic characteristics in relation to anastomosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS The Numerical analysis focuses o...

A patient-specific study of blood flow in a cerebral aneurysm using medical images

Background: Cerebral aneurysm disease causes intracranial hemorrhage by rupturing, which can eventually, lead to organ failure or death. For this reason, it is important to anticipate the reasons for rupturing of a cerebral aneurysm from biomechanical point of view. Investigating this disease may even help the physicians to find treatments and predict the patient’s situation. This research was ...

Computational model of blood flow in the aorto-coronary bypass graft

BACKGROUND Coronary artery bypass grafting surgery is an effective treatment modality for patients with severe coronary artery disease. The conduits used during the surgery include both the arterial and venous conduits. Long- term graft patency rate for the internal mammary arterial graft is superior, but the same is not true for the saphenous vein grafts. At 10 years, more than 50% of the vein...

Blood flow simulations in patient-specific coronary bypass grafts

The purpose of this paper was to investigate the hemodynamic parameters associated with the blood flow in failed coronary venous bypass grafts using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique. A narrowed section creates bypass graft constriction and disturbed flow. This change of the flow direction alters significantly the local hemodynamic parameters. In this paper, a patient specific thre...
